Which Supercharger is right for me?

Which Supercharger is right for me?

Are you an adrenaline junkie, looking to add even more power than basic bolt on's. Want big gains? A supercharger is a perfect choice to add power and torque while still retaining all vehicle creature comforts. Forced induction is one of the most cost effective ways to power to your vehicle. Wither its an F150 or mustang GT you drive on the weekends . A supercharger is a great choice to get the job done. Now comes the difficult part, which one do I go with?

Lets take a look at some of the basic differences between the top superchargers out

there.

    -Centrifugal

    -Roots/Twin Screw

Centrifugal Supercharger

A Centrifugal Supercharger is one of the most common supercharger designs that have

been around. The biggest benefit is they are compact, but pack a large punch..

This makes them easy to bolt on to either side of the engine bay. These can be belt

driven or direct driven from the crank as many do in some high horsepower

applications.

They are very efficient and have little parasitic loss from the engine, however where

they shine is in the upper rpm range. So driving around easy you'll see little to no loss in

mileage. One thing that will help with getting the vehicle in the power band sooner and

into boost would be to swap out your differential gears & tire size.

Roots/Twins Screw Supercharger

While a roots and twins crew may look similar. They are slightly different in how they

compress air. A roots style will create pressure directly in the manifold where a twin

screw will compress the air that is forced in between the 2 rotors.

Twin Screw Supercharger

A screw compressor is a positive displacement machine that uses a pair of intermeshing

rotors to produce compression. The rotors are comprised of helical lobes that are affixed

to a front and rear shaft. One rotor referred to as the male rotor will typically have three

lobes. On the contrary, the other rotor referred to as the female rotor will typically have

five valleys machined into it that match the curvature of the male lobes. However, the

number of lobes on the male and the number of valleys on the female rotor can vary

between compressor manufacturers. Nevertheless, the rotors never make contact with

each other or the rotor housing, instead they are timed by a pair of gears operating in a

lubricated chamber which is separated from the rotor chamber. With the 3-5 rotor

combination, the male rotor turns 3 times for every one time of the female rotor. Hence,

because of the number of male lobes there are three air compression cycles for every

revolution of the male rotor.

Roots Style Supercharger

The main example of a Roots style supercharger, widely used in newer cars today is the

Eaton TVS.   Eaton supercharger has been improving engine performance since 1985,

beginning with the M-Series.

Five generations later, the TVS (Twin Vortices Series) was introduced and provides up

to a 12% efficiency improvement. It also has a higher speed capability, from 18,000 to

24,000 rpm, which broadens the supercharger operating range.

Today, TVS technology is available in 2 different families: R-Series with 4 lobes

optimized for peak engine power applications, and V-Series with 3 lobes optimized for

peak efficiency at low engine speeds, which is ideal for 2-stage or compound boosting

systems where a turbocharger and supercharger work in combination.

TVS V-Series rotor design

V-Series:

High pressure ratio capability of 2.5.

Peak efficiency typically occurs at moderate pressure ratios and low speed.

Ideal for compound and single boosted engines with improved efficiency at low engine speed.

TVS R-Series rotor design

R-Series:

Pressure ratio capability of 2.5.

Peak efficiencies typically occur at high pressure ratio and high speed.

Ideal for single stage boosting applications focused on rated engine power.

Warranty

While most customers use price as their main deciding factor, the warranty should play

an important role as well. A cheap supercharger kit won't be worth the savings if it

doesn't include some type of warranty. Reputable manufacturers offer standard

warranties with the option for purchase extended warranties. Since superchargers can

cost thousands of dollars and your vehicle much more, it's important to make sure your

investment is protected.

So, which one is best for me?

Now you have some of the technical information, how do you choose?

There are no simple choices when it comes to modifying vehicles and choosing the right

supercharger for you is no different. At least now you have a good understanding of the

options available and what you can expect. If you have any further questions about the

finer details of blowers, your setup, or your future boosting plans, Of course, you can

always give us a call, message, or chat and we can help you choose.
