Most shackles have a larger pin diameter compared to the ""nominal"" shackle size or shackle body size classification. In most cases the shackle pin is 1/8 inch larger in diameter compared to the shackle nominal size designation. For example, the most common size shackle for midsize trucks, jeeps and SUVs is a 3/4 inch shackle that has a pin diameter of 7/8 inch so that the shear strength of the pin matches or exceeds the strength of the shackle body size. Here is a short list of common shackles sizes used for offroading and vehicle recovery so you can get familiar with their corresponding pins sizes.
1/2 inch nominal shackle size - 5/8 inch diameter pin
5/8 inch nominal shackle size - 3/4 inch diameter pin
3/4 inch nominal shackle size - 7/8 inch diameter pin
7/8 inch nominal shackle size - 1.0 inch diameter pin
1.0 inch nominal shackle size - 1.125 inch diameter pin
